Where to See the Foliage in Ayer and Nashoba Valley

October 12, 2025

The beauty of Fall emerges strong in Ayer and across Nashoba Valley. If you are new to the area, here are a few spots to enjoy:

Nashua River Rail Trail. The trail runs from Ayer through Groton, Pepperell, Dunstable and into New Hampshire. There are many stretches of color along the way and if you want to stay local, there’s plenty to see in Ayer and Groton.

Pirone Park. Get out of your vehicle and walk down to the perimeter path, past the playground to the edge of Grove Pond, near the benches.

Where to See Wachusett Mountain. Check out the foliage and views of Wachusett Mountain by visiting the General Field in Groton or the Fruitlands in Harvard. These are beautiful views, both over 20 miles away. From the General Field, the buildings you see in the distance are on Devens. From the Fruitlands, the view includes Shirley and Route 2.

Gibbett Hill, Groton. This spot offers a spectacular view and you can explore the stone remains of Bancroft Castle. Check out the Groton Trails Network page on Gibbet Hill for parking suggestions. Be prepared; you may have to walk uphill a short stretch without sidewalks.

If you want to learn a few of the stories behind this property, the Prescott Community Center in Groton offers history tours.
